Published on 10 August 2026 by Gold ReserveThe gram is the simplest unit for understanding the value of gold. Once you know the price of one gram, you can work out the value of any coin and any bar. Here is how it works, without the jargon.
What the gold price per gram means
The gold price per gram is the price of one gram of pure gold, that is, 24 carat gold. On 10 August 2026 it is around 121 euros a gram. That price is not fixed: it moves continuously, along with the world gold price, so it can change several times in the same day. You can follow it at any moment on our live gold price page.
From the gram to the ounce and the kilo
On the markets, gold is quoted mainly in ounces, but everything comes back to the gram. Here are the reference points, on the basis of about 121 euros a gram.
| Unit | Equivalent | Indicative value |
|---|---|---|
| 1 gram | 1 g | about €121 |
| 1 ounce | 31.10 g | about €3,765 |
| 1 kilo | 1,000 g | about €121,000 |
These amounts are only there to give the order of magnitude, since the price moves continuously.
Working out the value of a coin or a bar
The principle is always the same: multiply the weight of gold contained by the price per gram. A coin is not always pure gold, and only the gold it actually contains counts. A 20 francs Napoléon holds 5.806 grams of gold, which gives about 700 euros at the current price, even though it weighs a little more on the scales. A 5 g minted bar, on the other hand, is pure gold: its 5 grams are worth about 605 euros. For large quantities the logic does not change: a one kilo bar is simply 1,000 grams of pure gold.
Why coins carry a premium
When you buy a coin, you pay a little more than the plain value of its gold. That extra is called the premium, and it is easily explained. First, a coin has to be made. It must be engraved, struck, checked and packed, and that costs something on top of the metal. Much of that cost is fixed, so it weighs proportionally more on small units. That is why a small format shows a higher premium than a large bar for the same amount of gold. Then there is supply and demand. A coin that is sought after and easy to sell on, such as the 20 francs Napoléon in France, costs a little more simply because many people want it. The premium stays more moderate on the most common and most plentiful coins. Finally, the premium rewards recognition and trust. A well-known gold coin is immediately identifiable, verifiable and sellable anywhere, which is worth something real compared with an anonymous piece of metal. That is why two coins containing the same amount of gold may not show exactly the same price: it all comes down to the premium.
Where to see the live gold price per gram
Since the price never stops moving, the most reliable thing is to look at the price of the day when you need it, on our live gold price page, or directly on the listings in our gold and silver shop.
In short
The gold price per gram is the value of one gram of pure gold at the current price, about 121 euros on 10 August 2026. For a coin or a bar, multiply that price by the weight of gold it contains, then add a small premium. That is what explains the slight gap with the raw value of the metal.
