4 Ducats Austria | Gold

The 4 Ducats is a gold coin of the Austrian Empire, struck between 1872 and 1936.

The obverse shows the portrait of Franz Joseph I, emperor of Austria and Hungary from 1848 to 1916; the reverse shows the double-headed imperial eagle of the Habsburgs. It weighs 13.96 grams, for a diameter of 40 mm.

This coin stands out for being unusually thin and struck at 986 thousandths, therefore almost pure gold, whereas at that time most coins were struck at 900 or 916.7 thousandths.
