The 40 Francs Bonaparte An XI to An XII was struck between 1802 and 1803. It is the very first 40 Franc gold coin.
The obverse shows the portrait of Napoléon Bonaparte who, during those two years, was First Consul before becoming, in 1804, the first Emperor of the French under the name Napoléon I; the reverse carries the face value « 40 francs » and the year within a wreath. It is 900 thousandths fine, weighs 12.90 grams, with a diameter of 26 mm.
