The 50 Francs gold coin was struck between 1854 and 1904 in three versions: Napoléon bare head, Napoléon laureate head and Génie. It is the first 50 Franc coin in French monetary history. Offered here is the laureate head version, issued between 1862 and 1868.
The obverse shows Napoléon III in right profile and the reverse the face value « 50 francs » on either side of an eagle surrounded by the collar of the Legion of Honour. It is 900 thousandths fine, weighs 16.12 grams, with a diameter of 28 mm.
Please note: if you would like this coin in a particular version (year, effigy, detail and so on), please contact us before ordering so that we can tell you whether we hold it in stock. The price may then be revised according to the coin’s rarity and condition. The photograph is not contractual.

Two effigies follow one another on the gold coins of Napoleon III, and they cover neither the same years nor the same mints: bare head or laureate head, how to tell them apart.
