100 Francs Génie | Gold

The 100 Francs gold coin was struck between 1855 and 1914. It exists in two types: the 100 Francs Napoléon, bare or laureate head, and the 100 Francs Génie. Offered here is the 100 Francs Génie.

A first series was issued between 1878 and 1906, with the edge inscription « Dieu protège la France ». That is the main difference from the second series, 1907 to 1914, whose edge carries in relief the motto « Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité ».

The obverse shows the Genius of the Republic writing on the tablet of laws; the reverse shows the face value « 100 francs » within a wreath of oak, with the motto « Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité ».

The 100 Francs is the largest of the French gold coins. It is 900 thousandths fine, weighs 32.26 grams, with a diameter of 35 mm.
