The 20 Francs Génie was struck over two distinct periods: under the Second Republic from 1848 to 1849, then under the Third Republic from 1871 to 1898.
The obverse shows the Genius of the Republic writing on the tablet of laws and the reverse the face value « 20 francs » within a wreath of oak, together with the motto « Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité ». It is 900 thousandths fine, weighs 6.45 grams, with a diameter of 21 mm.
