The 50 Pesos is the best known Mexican gold coin, nicknamed the « mini bar ». It is 900 thousandths fine, weighs 41.67 grams and measures 37 mm across. It was first struck in 1921 for the centenary of Mexican independence.
The obverse shows the goddess of Victory, holding out a laurel wreath and a broken chain; behind her stand the two Mexican volcanoes, Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. It carries the face value « 50 pesos », the date of independence, 1821, and the year of striking.
The reverse shows the eagle perched on a cactus with a snake in its beak, surrounded by the legend « estados unidos mexicanos ». The edge carries the inscription « independencia y libertad ».
