The American Buffalo is a gold coin issued by the United States since 2006. Its design takes up that of the « Buffalo Nickel » by James Earle Fraser, from 1913: the obverse shows the profile of a Native American chief, the reverse an American bison.
It contains one troy ounce of gold at 999.9 thousandths, that is 31.1 grams, for a diameter of 32.7 mm. Its face value is 50 dollars and it is guaranteed by the United States government.
