Half Sovereign | Gold

The Half Sovereign is a British gold coin struck by the Royal Mint. It is 916.7 thousandths fine, with a gross weight of 3.99 grams for a diameter of 19 mm.

The obverse carries the effigy of the reigning British sovereign; the reverse shows, depending on the issue, Saint George slaying the dragon or the crowned royal shield.

The half sovereign is worth 10 shillings, that is half a pound. The Royal Mint also struck double sovereigns, two pounds, and quintuple sovereigns, five pounds, but only the sovereign and the half sovereign were struck regularly for circulation.
