The Krugerrand 1/4 ounce is a South African gold coin, created in 1967 to market South African gold internationally and to put gold within reach of private buyers. It owes its popularity to the one ounce Krugerrand. It is 916.7 thousandths fine, weighs 8.48 grams and measures 22 mm across.
The obverse, designed by Otto Schultz, carries the portrait of Paul Kruger, who gives the coin its name, with the inscription « suid-afrika / south africa ».
The reverse shows a springbok, the antelope emblematic of South Africa, with the inscriptions « krugerrand » and the year.
